The Medicine of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a classical system of medicine that sees the human being as part of the whole of nature, not separate. From this place of observation the Meridian system or 经络 (jīngluò) in Chinese, was discovered. The original Chinese word for Meridian literally translates to warp and weft which implies that we are woven into the whole and the whole woven into us. Although as humans, in a modern world it is very easy to forget this connection. Acupuncture aims at returning us back to this place of balance, cutting through stuckness to help us become more integrated and this integration begins with self; the integration of all aspects of our being, mind, body, and spirit.

In modern life, it is easy to forget this connection. We become distracted and disconnected from our bodies, our emotions, and our sense of purpose. Acupuncture offers a return: a way to restore balance, move through stagnation, and become more integrated. It does not impose healing from the outside, but gently reminds the body of its own innate capacity to heal and harmonize.

Clients often describe feeling more grounded, more present, more at ease. Often there is a shift in physical symptoms—pain softens, digestion improves, sleep deepens. Other times, the change is more internal: a quieter mind, a clearer sense of self, a feeling of spaciousness within. Acupuncture touches many layers, and at its best, it helps us come home to ourselves.

The Movement of Circle

When asked why he continued to practice the cello daily at age 90, legendary cellist Pablo Casals replied, “Because I think I’m making progress.”

I have long loved this quote and as a musician and healer who is always learning, I am reminded that our own healing shows up much the same way. We can always begin again and the possibility of growth and change is always a choice we can make.

“You ask why I live in the green mountains;
I smile and do not answer—my heart is at peace.
Peach blossoms float on flowing water,
Here is another world.”
